Public Health.
Notable is the history of our city public health. From 1550 to 1565 there were three hospitals opened in the city, and in 1677 the Phara chemist's was built, which functions nowadays and the only museum-chemist's in Belarus was created in its premises. The first autopsy in Eastern Europe was made exactly in our city. In 1775 the first higher educational establishment in Belarus – Grodno Medical Academy – was founded.At present there are 8 hospitals containing 3720 beds, 7 health centers (five of them have in-service hospitals), 22 polyclinics, numbering 4.3 thousand visits per shift in our city nowadays.
1,650 doctors and more than 5,000 medium-level and junior medical staff work in the public health establishments.

There are specialized centers in our city clinics: traumatological, perinatal, gastroenterological, neurological, microvascular, hepatology ones.
Unique operations are performed in Grodno, laparoscopy and microsurgery technics being used widely.
We have a station of the ambulance service with two substations, rehabilitation center for the disabled and sick children and a children's home.
Medical provision of city-dwellers is made by 15 state-owned and 14 private drugstores.
In 1958 Grodno Medical Institute was founded, the University status being granted in 2000. Students' education is provided by the 4 faculties – the Medical Treatment, Pediatrics, Medical Psychology and the one of Chief Nurses, foreign students are also trained here. Three correspondent members of Belarusian Academy of Medical Sciences, 47 Professors, 102 Associate Professors and 173 Candidates of Medical Sciences work at 41 Departments of Medical University. During the time of its existence 10,463 doctors have been trained here.
On the territory of the city 31 doctors are entitled for private practice. They have special licences and are fully registered, 10 of them being stomatologists. There are also 14 commercial medical enterprises in Grodno, rendering medical assistance to city-dwellers.
